Fandom:
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Medium/Media: TV show? Book? Comic? Band? All of the above?
A movie. It was made in 2005, in case anyone's interested.
Extent:What are newbies letting themselves in for - a single book or a fifteen-book saga? A fifteen-episode cancelled TV show, or nine seasons of twenty 45-minute episodes? A set of comics that'll need a truck to deliver?
An hour and a half of pure, unadulterated fun. Even if you don't want to join the fandom, do watch the movie. It's tragically underrated.
Genre: Science fiction? Fantasy? Horror?
Realism, to an extent. It takes place in contemporary L.A., with all that entails.

Canon
Main characters: Name the main characters with a brief bio.
Harry Lockhart (played by Robert Downey Jr) is a pseudo-New Yorker and pushing forty good-for-nothing, who makes his living by stealing audio-visual components. Due to a series of unexpected and accidental events, he gets whisked away to L.A., where he meets the private detective Perry "Gay Perry" van Shrike (Val Kilmer) and reunites with his highschool sweetheart Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan), who is an aspiring actress. Harry is hapless and pretty much the adorable personified, Perry is smooth and ice-cold, and Harmony is kind and flaky. Actually, everyone is pretty flaky -- I don't think there is one well-adjusted character in the whole movie.
Main plot: A brief explanation of the main plot of the story. Try to avoid spoilers! If you can't avoid major spoilers, warn for them in your cut-text!
These LJ-cuts suck. )
Setting: When and where is the story set?
L.A., now-ish. The intro-esque episode takes place in New York.
Why I think you should watch/read/otherwise partake of this fandom: Reasons in canon that new people might be interested.
Because the movie is brilliant and it's a shame the fandom is so small. We need more kids in the sandbox.
Activity level: What's happening to canon at the moment? Is it finished, or ongoing, or debatable?
It's finished. There's been rumours of a sequel for years, but I don't think it'll happen.
Shipping: Does the canon tend towards slash, het or gen? NB this means actual IN CANON pairings, not the sort you see through the goggles (yes, I am as guilty of this as the next ficcer, assuming the next ficcer is [livejournal.com profile] fiareynne).
50/50? Harry and Harmony is canon, but they never actually get around to it. And, well, Harry and Perry do snog, even if it's just a diversion. The movie's pretty rife with subtext, if you ask me.

Fanon and Fandom
Communities: Places that new people can go for fic/art/fine dining and conversation - include LJ comms or off-LJ lists, whatever. Might be wise to mention how welcoming the comms are of new people.
As far as I know, there is only one KKBB community, [livejournal.com profile] kkissbbang. Yuletide hosts most of the fanfic
Recs: Recommend up to five fics/artses/whatever. (Limit suggested only so it doesn't go on forever.)
Oh, wow. Woo. This LJ-cut is tiny. Is it real? )
Activity level: Roughly how active is the fandom? Can be expressed in terms of community posts per day/week/month/ice age, or just as a general vibe.
Like I said, it's a small fandom, and it's pretty dead. Tragic, really. But it's had a recent upswing with a new kinkmeme being posted and all, and there are still some great older fanfics to be found.
Shipping: Does the fandom tend towards slash, het or gen? Is there a majority-preferred pairing? Does it match up with canonically established pairings? Is the fandom generally welcoming of alternative pairings or will it bite your head off?
Harry/Perry is clear majority, for obvious reasons if you've seen the movie. Some Harry/Harmony shippers exist, as well as several Harmony/Harry/Perry ones. Since these three characters are the main ones, and not a lot of minor characters are introduced, it's them the fans mostly play around with.
Kink: What is the fandom's attitude towards kink? Is there a kink meme?
There are several fics with D/S vibes, with Harry as sub and Perry as dom, so the fandom is not averse to kink. The kinkmeme is located at [livejournal.com profile] kinkbangmeme.

Fandom:
Sherlock Holmes movieverse
Medium/Media: TV show? Book? Comic? Band? All of the above?
A movie adaptation of the famous novels and short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Extent: What are newbies letting themselves in for - a single book or a fifteen-book saga? A fifteen-episode cancelled TV show, or nine seasons of twenty 45-minute episodes? A set of comics that'll need a truck to deliver?
If you're purely in it for the movie, that's easily achieved. If you want to get familiar with book canon as well--which I certainly hope you are--you're in for 56 short stories and 4 novels, and that's just the original canon. Then you have the plethora of other adaptations, and then we get to the pastichés. But everything between just watching the movie and being a dyed-in-the-wool Holmsian works. (As for other adaptations, the Granada TV-series starring Jeremy Brett is considered a must among fans, partly due to Brett's excellent gay portrayal of Holmes. Personally, I heartily recommend Bert Coules' adaptation for BBC Radio, starring Clive Merrison as Holmes and Michael Williams as Watson.)
Genre: Science fiction? Fantasy? Horror?
Victorian England! Prepare to get run over by four-wheelers, choke on pipe smoke, doff your frock coat before a fight, bring your card with you and forget all you know about water closets. Movieverse is somewhat more action-filled and less "formal" than original book canon, but nevertheless firmly set in the late 19th century. Any mention of magic, other than in pure jest and/or ultimately proved to be a hoax, will be frowned upon. Let's not even get started on anachronisms.

Canon
Main characters: Name the main characters with a brief bio.
Mr Sherlock Holmes is the brilliant consulting detective that has brought deduction to an art. Dr John H Watson is his friend and fellow lodger, who not only assists him on his cases but also becomes his chronicler. They met through a mutual acquaintance when Watson had just returned from the Afghan War and was in search of cheap dwellings, and in that moment one of the world's greatest love stories began. Holmes is a genius when it comes to logic and knowledge, but he's seriously lacking in social and emotional skills, and to be quite frank with you, I'm convinced he has some form of high-functioning autism, like Asperger's Syndrome. At the very least. Watson is a man of action, rather popular with the ladies, and fiercely loyal. It should be mentioned that both these men love sarcasm, so prepare yourself for a blitz of bickering and banter.
Main plot: A brief explanation of the main plot of the story. Try to avoid spoilers! If you can't avoid major spoilers, warn for them in your cut-text!
Holmes and Watson solve crimes. That's pretty much the gist of it. There are a couple of important events in canon, though. Cut for spoilers you should know already. )
Setting: When and where is the story set?
Like I said, Victorian England. With occasional visits to Switzerland or France.
Why I think you should watch/read/otherwise partake of this fandom: Reasons in canon that new people might be interested.
Because it is brilliant. I've never been part of a kinder of more intelligent fandom, or a funnier one. And the average quality of fanworks is amazing. Really, it's such a nice place to visit.
Activity level: What's happening to canon at the moment? Is it finished, or ongoing, or debatable?
The book canon ended some 80 years ago, but there are already plans for two sequels to the movie Sherlock Holmes.
Shipping: Does the canon tend towards slash, het or gen? NB this means actual IN CANON pairings, not the sort you see through the goggles (yes, I am as guilty of this as the next ficcer, assuming the next ficcer is [livejournal.com profile] fiareynne).
Well. The majority of the fandom are Holmes/Watson shippers, and with good reason. I mean, the creators and actors themselves say that the movie's pretty much about Holmes and Watson's (platonic...) relationship. But, it's not yet canon that Holmes and Watson intimate friends indeed. What is canon is Watson's engagement to Mary Morstan, and the seriously weird relationship between Holmes and Irene Adler. Though I'm not sure if the latter should count, since they don't actually do anything about it. If Holmes/Adler counts as canon, then Holmes/Watson should as well, imho.

Fanon and Fandom
Communities: Places that new people can go for fic/art/fine dining and conversation - include LJ comms or off-LJ lists, whatever. Might be wise to mention how welcoming the comms are of new people.
Personally, I think [livejournal.com profile] holmeswatson09 is the best community. If you're looking for more gen-oriented stuff, [livejournal.com profile] sherlock2009 is a good place to start.
Recs: Recommend up to five fics/artses/whatever. (Limit suggested only so it doesn't go on forever.)
A greater mystery is why you bothered using a LJ-cut at all. )
Activity level: Roughly how active is the fandom? Can be expressed in terms of community posts per day/week/month/ice age, or just as a general vibe.
Currently it's crazy busy, with five posts a day at [livejournal.com profile] holmeswatson09 at minimum. We're certainly alive!
Shipping: Does the fandom tend towards slash, het or gen? Is there a majority-preferred pairing? Does it match up with canonically established pairings? Is the fandom generally welcoming of alternative pairings or will it bite your head off?
Like I've already said, the majority of fandom ship Holmes/Watson. There are also Holmes/Adler shippers and some Watson/Mary shippers, but I haven't seen much of them. I'm afraid this is a very slash-oriented fandom. ♥
Kink: What is the fandom's attitude towards kink? Is there a kink meme?
Seeing that a part four of the [livejournal.com profile] sherlockkink meme has been posted, I ~suppose~ the fandom is not averse to kink. Quite the opposite, in fact. There also seems to be a trend of bottom!Holmes, or--perhaps more fittingly--of top!Watson.

Fandom:
Iron Man movieverse
Medium/Media: TV show? Book? Comic? Band? All of the above?
A movie adaptation of the Marvel comic books.
Extent:What are newbies letting themselves in for - a single book or a fifteen-book saga? A fifteen-episode cancelled TV show, or nine seasons of twenty 45-minute episodes? A set of comics that'll need a truck to deliver?
If you're only in the movieverse section of the fandom, it's very easy to join; the Iron Man saga is planned to be a trilogy, with the second installment being released this spring. However, the movieverse fandom is very closely knit with the comics canon, and... Well, it's Marvel. Buckle up, kids, you're in a for a ride.
Genre: Science fiction? Fantasy? Horror?
Like all Marvel comics, Iron Man takes place in an alternate universe where super-heroes exist and Forbes 400 looks a little bit different. To what extent the movieverse tallies with this aspect of comics canon, only time will tell. As it stands now, Iron Man is an action flick with sci-fi elements. It is, after all, about the engineering genius and playboy billionaire Tony Stark and how he builds a tailor-made tank to fight evil. There will be a lot of techno-babble and questionable science involved.

Canon
Main characters: Name the main characters with a brief bio.
Anthony "Tony" Edward Stark--played by Robert Downey Jr--is one of the richest and most brilliant men on earth. He is C.E.O. of the weapon manufacturing company Stark Industries and spends most of his time either among high society or in his workshop; one gets the impression he prefers the latter. His only real friends are his P.A. Virginia "Pepper" Potts and his military liaison James "Rhodey" Rhodes, as well as his A.I. JARVIS. Tony's pretty messed up and would probably be a shrink's wet dream, but his most prominent issues are his self-loathing and massive guilt complex. This is the man who builds a robot suit to fight every evil on the planet, because he feels it's his responsibility. Clearly, he'd benefit from some therapy, if only he would acknowledge his problems.
Main plot: A brief explanation of the main plot of the story. Try to avoid spoilers! If you can't avoid major spoilers, warn for them in your cut-text!
For your convenience, an LJ-cut. )
Setting: When and where is the story set?
In a slightly AU version of our world, either contemporary or twenty-minutes-into-the-future.
Why I think you should watch/read/otherwise partake of this fandom: Reasons in canon that new people might be interested.
Because it's fun? The movie is really good, with humour, drama, action and believable characters, topped off with a plethora of prettiness. And it's Tony MF Stark -- how can you not love him?
Activity level: What's happening to canon at the moment? Is it finished, or ongoing, or debatable?
The Iron Man saga is an on-going trilogy, with its second installment being released this spring. However, the first movie is pretty much a stand-alone, so don't let that scare you off.
Shipping: Does the canon tend towards slash, het or gen? NB this means actual IN CANON pairings, not the sort you see through the goggles (yes, I am as guilty of this as the next ficcer, assuming the next ficcer is [livejournal.com profile] fiareynne).
Given that Tony Stark is a man-slut in canon, and that RDJ can have sizzling chemistry with a piece of wood, there is sexual tension in pretty much every scene. It's canon that there's some serious UST going on between Tony and Pepper, but it's not yet resolved, and it doesn't stop him from flirting with everyone else, including Rhodey. And, yes, JARVIS.

Fanon and Fandom
Communities: Places that new people can go for fic/art/fine dining and conversation - include LJ comms or off-LJ lists, whatever. Might be wise to mention how welcoming the comms are of new people.
There is one movieverse-centric Iron Man community as far as I know, which is [livejournal.com profile] ironman_movie. [livejournal.com profile] starkindustries is a Tony Stark-centric community.
Recs: Recommend up to five fics/artses/whatever. (Limit suggested only so it doesn't go on forever.)
For your convenience, another LJ-cut. )
Activity level: Roughly how active is the fandom? Can be expressed in terms of community posts per day/week/month/ice age, or just as a general vibe.
It's pretty dead now, sadly enough, but hopefully that will change as the release date of Iron Man 2 approaches. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, anyways.
Shipping: Does the fandom tend towards slash, het or gen? Is there a majority-preferred pairing? Does it match up with canonically established pairings? Is the fandom generally welcoming of alternative pairings or will it bite your head off?
Tony Stark is pretty much considered the little black dress of the Marvel fandom. Movieverse most often pair him up with Pepper, sometimes with Rhodey, and occasionally JARVIS. There a few crossover pairings with Tony as well, and several authors have mashed comics canon and movieverse together to pair Tony and Steve "Captain America" Rogers up. Gen fic exists as well.
Kink: What is the fandom's attitude towards kink? Is there a kink meme?
Again, it's Tony Stark. He's the man who makes a hi-tech pace-maker look sexy. I have yet to see a someone complain about the idea of Tony and sexual fetishes. If you're not averse to read comics canon, I can even point you to several delicious fics with serious kink and BDSM elements. As for a kink meme, there is the [livejournal.com profile] marvel_kink.

First of all, I want to thank my f-list for the welcome backs and congratulations! ♥ I'll reply to your comments in a mo!

Secondly, today's my birthday. ♥ I'm finally legally allowed to read porn, which I think [livejournal.com profile] usomitai had in mind when she wrote me my birthday present. *g* Went, Baby is a short sequel to our HouseBigBang fic Go, Baby, Go. It has cross-dressing, stalking and crazy OMCs, and now also smut, so I'm in seventh heaven. ♥

(From mum and dad, I got several presents, among them Singstar: Queen to PS2. I didn't even know it existed! *squee* I'll go downstairs and rock out to I Want To Break Free later, and probably score Tone-deaf. ♥)

But now, meme! Yes, it's that meme again. ♥ This time [livejournal.com profile] latenightcuppa gave me the five icons.

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
