Fanart: "The Graduate"

Look! I've decided to actually be serious about my doodling and have added a header. \o/ (Doesn't mean I'm any better at coming up with titles, though. But it was either this or "Remus J. Lupin," and, well, anything is better than that.)
ETA: This drawing now has a fic to go with it; Quite Dashing, by the marvellous

Title: The Graduate
Characters/Pairings: Remus
Genre: Portrait
Rating/Warnings: G
Medium: Lead and colouring pencils
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter or any of the characters; I'm just playing around a bit.

Remus Lupin, about 19-20 years old. Post-Hogwarts, in other words. I know he probably doesn't look all that 70's -- which is a bit embarrassing seeing how much I have obsessed over the characters looking "authentic" -- but I just couldn't resist the style of dress (Remus Lupin + fedora + sports jacket + cigarettes = spontaneous combustion of Anna).
I didn't use a reference for the pose or face (unless staring adoringly at pictures of David Thewlis for a couple of hours counts) though I did use a lot of it when it comes to the clothes. And the hat. Oh god, the hat. Remind me to never draw hats again.
All in all, though, I'm pretty satisfied with this picture. Or rather... Aw, sod it, I'll be honest. I adore this picture, I am ridiculously proud over it and I sort of want to put finishing touches on it forever. I hope you can bear with me, because I know there is nothing worse than an artist who loves her own work. To my defense, however, I'll tell you that I'm generally only satisfied with about one drawing out of a hundred (thank you, performance anxiety!) so it's not often I feel proud over my work.
Also, as a side note, it's a bit awkward asking your mum if you've drawn the crotch correctly. It's just that normally I use real life references for my drawings, and I can't say that I've spent my free time staring at men's crotches. So it's... well, yeah, awkward. God bless my mum for helping me, though.

Date: 2008-10-06 04:32 pm (UTC)I love the hat. I'm sorry you had so much trouble with it but it is gorgeous.
And the jacket is all things wonderful.
I love the way you colour.
What kind of pencils do you use?
There's a gorgeous softness to it. it's beautiful.
The colours are blended so well.

Date: 2008-10-06 04:48 pm (UTC)I'm very happy to hear that the hat turned out okay. It was my first try to draw a hat (bad, hurried sketches of baseball caps does not count) so I suppose that was why I had such a hard time with it. The first time is always the hardest.
What pencils I use? Well, I start the drawing by using a 0.3 propelling pencil, filled with HB/B leads. Then I use a softer lead pencil (2B-4B) to create shadows and volume. I use this as foundation for the colouring. I use Faber Castell's Creative Studio Art Grip pencils because I feel that they blend nicer and smoother with each other. (Oh my, I'm such a snob when it comes to drawing!)
Again, I'm so very glad to hear that you liked this. Your words really warmed. <3

Date: 2008-10-07 08:14 am (UTC)I now want to write a fanfic about Remus wearing a hat like that.
I'll try not to horrifically fangirly over hearing that I inspire the great Samantha to write fanfic, and instead go nutty over the prospect of possible fendora!Remus.

(And again, thank you for your kind words!)

Date: 2008-10-07 08:15 am (UTC)For some reason, the hat got really popular. I guess I have to break my promise and draw more of them. *g*

I'd be almost a bit worried with this Lupin, if he crossed my path. >3
Heeee~ That is probably my subconscious being tired of weak!Remus that shows. x3
Again, thank you so much! Hopefully I'll be done flailing and squeeing by tonight. *g*

Yes, it was awkward, I tell you! But seeing that I had to work pretty much on it, it's lucky that I did ask her. But it's not something I want to do again. Ever.
